EPA EJ Small Grant Trip Report

Three Degrees Warmer received a small grant from the Environmental Projection Agency’s Environmental Justice Grants Program to train residents in Kivalina on how to operate the Kivalina Biochar Reactor, a nonsewered, mobile sanitation system designed by commission of the Kivalina City and Tribal Councils to process human waste into a pathogen-free byproduct. We hosted our first training in Kivalina from Oct. 26 through November 10, 2018. Due to multiple issues obstacles we confronted, some foreseen and others unexpected, including broken aircraft and storm delays, we had to scale back the number of training days from 5 days to 1 day.
If we evaluated the success of the trip based on the number of training days, we did not succeed according to our expectations. However, the trip successfully accomplished multiple gains, including: site preparation and unit installation with mobile power supply; updates on the project’s status to the City Council, Tribal Council, community residents, and trainees; testing of the operating system, processing and pyrolysis hardware, biochar unit architecture, and power supply; refinement of the training and testing agenda; and initiation of training and troubleshooting with the trainees, along with trainee preparation for subsequent trainings. We also completed a detailed inventory of action items to be completed prior to our next trip.
We are now planning our next trip to Kivalina in 2019 to continue Kivalina Biochar Reactor operator trainings. Please see here for more information about the EPA EJ grant, the Kivalina Biochar Reactor project, and our project partners.

Relocation Archive to Be Exhibited in Morocco

In collaboration with Re-Locate, Three Degrees Warmer co-developed the Kivalina Archive, a digital platform that places the “official” history of Kivalina’s relocation, such as government geological surveys, alongside a relocation history told by the Kivalina people, including their experiences with the relocation process as well as photographs and videos documenting their everyday lives.
